Many people provide distilled water for dogs, cats and other pets because it is clean and toxin free. The process of distillation is natural. A water distiller gently boils tap water; clean, toxin-free steam rises, which then condenses and is collected. Distillation is amazing because it mirrors the natural hydrologic cycle. If you are already giving your pet high quality food and regular veterinary care, why wouldn’t you provide distilled water for dogs, cats, or your other pets?
Distilled Water is Purrfect for Cats…and Dogs Too!
Mammals like cats and dogs benefit from drinking distilled water in the same way that humans do. If you think about all the things that might be in your water like lead, nitrates, viruses, bacteria, chlorine, fluoride and more, it makes your head spin. There are contaminants in tap water that are not even being tested for. If you dog or cat is experiencing arthritis or inflammation and you’ve switched to grain-free food, your pet may also like distilled water. We’ve had customers write in saying that, given the choice, their pet will always choose distilled water over tap water.
Distilled Water for Other Pets
All pets will benefit from drinking distilled water. Hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, rabbits, reptiles, amphibians, and even large animals like horses enjoy drinking distilled water. In fact, some farmers use distilled water for their animals because it is clean and the animals like it. If you check your local municipal water system’s website, you will find that tap water is often not recommended for babies, elderly or immune-compromised people. One reason tap water is not recommended for babies is due to their size and underdeveloped immune systems. Because pets are also small, providing distilled water is healthful.
Distilled Water for Fish
Distilled water is the perfect starter water for your fish or amphibious pets, but you will need to oxygenate it and balance it first depending on what type of fish you have. Fish owners know that you need to have some understanding of water chemistry to keep fish healthy. Also, some types of fish or corals are more sensitive than others. Water needs to have just the right amount of calcium, alkalinity, salinity, pH, magnesium, phosphate, ammonia, and the right temperature to grow coral.
Using distilled water for fish is like starting with a clean slate. No need to worry about chlorine, fluoride, nitrates, lead, bacteria, or unknown chemicals or toxins that may be found in tap water. No need to purchase gallons of bottled filtered water. Because of this, it is easier to add in the right amount of minerals or to balance the pH of your water when starting with distilled water and also to top up. Please note that it is not recommended to put fish directly into freshly distilled water. A pump should be used to oxygenate the water or it should be oxygenated by shaking the water up first without fish in it, then adding it to the fish bowl.
Love Letters from Pure Water Distiller Owners
We’ve gotten so many “love letters” over the last 50 years from people using distilled water and loving it for a variety of reasons. We had a worm breeder who said all of his worms were dying until he started using distilled water. Vets have contacted us over the years and have used distilled water for animals suffering from diarrhea due to too much sulfur in the water. Distilled water has also gotten accolades from bird owners since it is devoid of chlorine and fluoride. A tropical fish owner reported that using distilled water helped him get rid of ich. We’ve also gotten so many letters from dog owners whose dogs experienced improvement from arthritis symptoms by drinking distilled water. While there are no scientific studies on this, and we can’t make health claims, we are so happy to know that both people and pets are enjoying distilled water!
